Working and Working Out From Home- Our 7 Best Tips

Working and Workout Out from Home

With the curfew upon us, we have more days ahead at home with kids, work needing to be done, and our body craving exercise.  We wanted to give you our top seven tips for these days!  What other tips do you have?  Comment below!

Get Dressed

Get dressed from head to toe. You should put on a shirt or outfit you’d normally wear to the office and not your pajamas. Don’t give yourself the liberty to dress too casually or informally considering you are at home and not the workplace.   It is particularly important when having video calls for work. More importantly, it will put you in the right mindset and you will be able to focus better on the work at hand.

Create a New Daily Schedule

Once dressed, write down an hour by hour framework for how you’ll spend your day.  Don’t feel locked into this schedule when you create it. But half the battle is simply getting it written down.  Give yourself a framework to start and adjust.  Publish your calendar so others can see it and quickly understand your commitments so they don’t bother you with trivial messages or distractions. You can block off time for work on projects, set reminders for important tasks, and even reserve a time to get dinner started.

Take Planned, Short Breaks

Just like the office, proactively take breaks every hour to avoid burnout. Take the kids for a walk (if the curfew has been lifted!!!), put in that load of laundry, stretch out, use a lacrosse ball, or find some other small task you can accomplish.  Set a timer for five minutes so you don’t get stuck playing a game on your phone! Believe it or not, working from home can take a toll on your nerves and energy levels. You have to be constantly available online to have video calls, attend virtual meetings, send out emails timely, and ensure everything works perfectly. Working from home is a lot more intense; you will miss the brief interactions with your colleagues which help you feel relaxed.

Eliminate Distractions

Shut the door to give yourself some privacy and separation, especially at home. Even hanging a curtain to separate your space can help. You’ll also want to put your phone away in another room, close tabs on your web browser and pause notifications so you’re not tempted to constantly check social media. Even setting a 10-minute meeting or two throughout your day to specifically check your phone and feeds can give you a break and something to look forward to.  Distractions crush our creativity and deplete our sense of happiness.  The research is just amazing about how our phones and technology are designed to addict us.

Avoid Isolation

We all need varying levels of personal contact with others.  Whether it’s work mates or workout mates, it’s helpful to have daily time set to check in with your co workers and fellow Crescent athletes.  During curfews and these extended required isolation of Corona, its even more important to have 2-3 close friends you can touch base with.

Setup a Workstation

If you haven’t set up a proper workstation at home, you would miss the regular working environment. That’s why some people aren’t as productive from home. To deal with it, set up your home office just like your workplace to feel more connected to work. Working from your bed or sofa is not ideal for making your best contribution.

Make sure to find or make a solid desktop, a firm chair, good internet connection, nearby power source, and if possible a source of natural light.  Set up your home office at an area where you can get plenty of natural light, you will definitely notice a difference.  Natural light will instantly uplift your mood and keep you motivated.  If you have family, try to clarify with them what you’re trying to do and give them some windows of when you’d be available for their questions and interaction.

Setup Your Work Out Station

Last but not least- get an area prepared to be able to workout.  Have your shoes nearby, your jump rope, and any other equipment you may have as near as you can.  Since this is just a temporary time it may look weird- but remember, you won’t be accepting any guests for awhile during Corona!  So take advantage of the extra space in the salon!
